First Person On the Scene (FPOS) - First Responder

This course is designed to take the first aider to the next level, participants will be taught the skills associated with rapid assessment, stabilisation and transfer of both the trauma victim and those suffering a medical emergency. It is aimed at those working in high risk and hostile environments. This course is fully recognised by the Security Industry Authority. This is an ideal course for remote medics, close protection and ship security officers.

Assessment

Assessment Guidance
The qualification is internally assessed by the following two methods:

On-course assessment:

This component of the assessment will involve learners demonstrating knowledge, understanding and practical first-aid skills throughout the duration of the course. This meets the qualification criteria contained within units 1,3 and 4

Distance study/assessment:

The distance study element involves learners carrying out research into the area of medical intelligence and environmental awareness supporting first aid provision. This meets the qualification criteria contained within unit 2.

Learners wishing to achieve the qualification must successfully achieve both of the above components to the required standard.

Unit 1: First Aid at Work

Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
Be able to assess an incident and conduct casualty surveys
Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
Know how to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding
Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles and joints
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with an eye injury
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning and anaphylaxis
Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury
Be able to provide First Aid to a casualty with suspected major illness

Unit 2: Medical Intelligence and Environmental Awareness
Understand how the environment can impact on the provision of first aid
Understand key medical intelligence which supports the provision of first aid for a specific environment
Understand how to support a variety of casualties

Unit 3: Correct Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Understand the safe use of an automated external defibrillator
Be able to demonstrate basic life support techniques using an automated external defibrillator
Understand how to carry out basic maintenance/checks of an automated external defibrillator

Unit 4: Advanced Medical Aid
Understand advanced airway management
Breathing – be able to use medical gases including use the Bag Mask Valve
Be able to demonstrate basic life support techniques using an AED
Understand how to carry out an advanced patient assessment
Understand how to treat ballistics injuries
Understand how to carry out patient immobilisation
Be able to assist a Medic
Understand the Triage process

Assessment Examination
At the end of the course students will be assessed by carrying out practical tests, written and oral tests.
